Where do you feel the most connected to nature?

Walking through the woods at my house. It’s 10 acres of trees and bees and birds.  We created trails and a walking art gallery. I also set a small space that I call my “Church”–my place to pause and meditate, and just be.

Nicole is an entrepreneur, startup advisor, avid yogi and amateur creative. In her current position as COO of Honua Hawaiian Skincare, she leads operations and marketing, which means she may be fine-tuning a new formula one day, ensuring the latest products make it to stores and e-commerce sites the next day, or planning one of the Honua’s annual sustainability events another day. Before making the career jump to consumer and beauty, Nicole was an investment banker and passionate renewable energy and sustainability devotee, holding senior positions at Citigroup, Inc. and SolarCity.  She lives in the thriving city of San Francisco, keeping very busy as a mom to two tiny humans and is usually found planning their next adventure.

Where do you feel the most connected to nature?

In the forest – both in the mountains here in California- and also the tropical forests that cover the islands in Hawai’i.

What’s your favorite/must follow green blog or social media account?

@OneTreePlanted or @Hoola.Honey (a bee relocation project on the Big Island of Hawai’i – they post facts about bees, our ecosystem and more.)

What’s one thing you make sure you do every day for the planet?

Seek alternatives to plastic. We recycle, compost and reuse as much as we can but getting my family out of using plastic has become a necessity.  And now that we are doing it, it really is not that hard.

What’s one thing you make sure you do every day for the planet?

I make a point to pick up at least one piece of trash from the ground every day- leaving the space I’ve been a little cleaner than I found it.

Now 12 years later, Mike saw another glaring unfulfilled niche – inclusive beauty and founded the gender-agnostic brand, haia (Happy as I Am) in 2021. His broad expertise in marketing, brand development, best-practice operational systems design and management has served him well in his entrepreneurial life. In his spare time, mike loves being out in the natural world and considers it essential to maintaining a healthy, unbiased perspective.

Where do you feel the most connected to nature?

I love getting into the back country and hiking off the beaten path. Usually, that requires a little stamina as the hikes will inevitably be 15 miles plus to do so. The back country in mountainous regions of the world is where you will see the most wildlife going about their daily business in the most pristine natural environments. While I love the scenic beauty of the surrounding terrain, encounters with the natural inhabitants who walked the planet before human intervention are the most awe-inspiring experiences. The second place I feel most connected is on the water. My favorite location for communing with abundant marine life is Antarctica.

What’s your favorite/must follow green blog or social media account?

As a big believer in leveraging corporate responsibility and action in planetary renewal efforts, I frequently access the research and information provided by ceres.org.

What’s one thing you make sure you do every day for the planet?

I always keep my personal mantra top of mind. RENEW: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and act accordingly. Small changes in behavior make a difference. I also meditate daily to maintain my ability to see the world as it is and keep the ego in check. Clear seeing and right action are required of today’s environmental leaders.
